The first Northern regiment of free African Americans recruited into the union army during the Civil War was the 54th Massachusetts, and its battle-line courage and ferocious dignity are the stuff of legend. The cap paired with an informational bookmark is a replica of the one worn by men in the 54th. Upon the cap crown, the Massachusetts men displayed the regimental number topped by a horn identifying the 54th as an infantry regiment. Legendary orator and editor Fredrick Douglass - an ex-slave who was already abolition's greatest voice crisscrossed the North amidst scorn and skepticism to find black volunteers for the 54th. His first two recruits were his sons Charles and Lewis. It was the entry of African American soldiers into battle that assured the North victory in the Civil War. |
